Because many online companies rely too heavily on marketing slogans and flashy logos, billions of dollars have been wasted on websites that seem to have taken a page from circus legend PT Barnum and treat their users like fools.
Nielsen said these companies were not only wasting money but also devaluing their brands. "Huge sums of money were poured into TV ads, and then people went to the website, which was terrible."
In short, magicians and clowns may be entertaining and eye-catching acts at trade shows, but when it comes to digital success, the title of Nelson's upcoming book, "Designing Web Usability: The Practice of Simplicity," says it all.

USA Today, Gannett Group Inc. executives urge regulators to catch up to the online age

Author: , News Service.

GENEVA – In the fast-paced world of internet communications, even regulators have to keep up.
That was the message delivered by industry executives at the opening ceremony of the Regulatory and Policy Summit held today in conjunction with the exhibition.
"Time is of the essence," said Alcatel chairman
The chairman of the French telecom equipment maker said that if standardization of important issues such as the next generation of mobile phones is not done quickly enough, it will stifle market opportunities.
In most cases, that means changing the way bodies like the International Telecommunication Union, the organizer of the conference, operate, according to several speakers.
AT&T's chairman and CEO said the approach regulators have taken so far simply isn't getting the job done.
“New technology breeds new competition, and new competition breeds new technology,” Armstrong said. “Regulators and the telecom industry share the responsibility of keeping the [resulting] flywheel turning.”
In addition, Armstrong called on regulators to ensure the internet is free from unnecessary regulation and to move quickly to adopt global standards such as third-generation wireless standards. “We need global standards, and we need them quickly,” he said.

As we cross the years, we will ask.

"Is technology delivering real progress for people around the world? Is that progress happening quickly? Or is it happening too slowly because we're stuck in 20th-century regulatory models?" Armstrong asked in his speech. "Regulation by individual countries is unacceptable for the internet," he added, "because it is a truly global [medium]."
Both industry executives agreed that a new service could become obsolete even before new standards are agreed upon. While both Armstrong and Churuk said the telecom market can largely function on its own, they also acknowledged the need for a global framework. Churuk cited encryption and e-commerce issues, such as maintaining privacy, as specific areas where such guidelines are needed.
Jens Arnsbak, head of the independent Post and Telecommunications Authority, the Dutch regulator, has called for what he calls “soft law,” which he defines as flexible guidelines rather than a rigid framework.
